Do this right now
- 1
Stop. Don't start the engine.
If you already started it, turn it off and leave it. If the car is at a pump, leave it where it is — the servo will be fine.
- 2
Call Ben on 0416 692 022.
Tell him your suburb, your vehicle make, and roughly how much petrol went in. He gives you an honest ETA on the call.
- 3
Wait with the car if it's safe.
No need to push the car or call a tow. Ben brings the mobile rig to you. If the car is at a servo, stand off to one side.

Drive away — no tow, no garage.
We drain the tank, flush the fuel lines, refuel with diesel, and you drive off. You get a tax invoice for your insurer.
What's actually happening
Diesel fuel is also a lubricant. It coats the high-pressure pump and the injectors as it flows through them. Petrol doesn't lubricate — it acts as a solvent. So when petrol gets into a diesel fuel system, it scrapes away the protective coatings, then runs through the injectors as a much-too-thin liquid.
If you haven't started the engine, none of that has happened yet. The petrol is sitting in the tank with the diesel. We drain it, flush the lines back to clean diesel, and the engine never sees the contamination.
If you started the engine and drove a short distance, some petrol has been through the system but the damage is usually minor and reversible. We still drain, flush, and refuel. The engine runs the same as before once we're done.
Questions about petrol in diesel
I put petrol in my diesel car. What should I do right now? +
Do not start the engine. If you are still at the pump, leave the keys out of the ignition and call Ben. If you have already started it, turn off the engine immediately and do not restart. The undriven fix is the cheapest. The post-driven fix is more expensive but still doable.
What damage does petrol cause in a diesel engine? +
Diesel fuel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump. Petrol does not — it acts as a solvent. Even a small percentage of petrol in the system, run through the engine, can scrape away protective coatings, damage the injectors, and (in worst cases) wreck the high-pressure pump entirely. The bill if that happens runs into thousands. Catching it before engine start, or stopping early after a start, prevents that.
How much fuel needs to be petrol before damage happens? +
There is no safe percentage in a modern common-rail diesel. Even 5% petrol contamination is enough to start damaging the pump. The fix is the same regardless of how much went in — drain the tank, flush the lines, refuel with the correct fuel.
Will my engine be ok after the drain and flush? +
If we get to it before engine start, or if you stopped early after a start, yes — no permanent damage. We have done thousands of these jobs across Perth. The engine runs the same as before. If you drove a long way before realising and the pump is damaged, that is a separate (bigger) job — call Ben and he will tell you honestly what is needed.
How much will this cost? +
For a typical petrol-in-diesel job in the Perth metro area, most prices fall between $150 and $350. The exact figure depends on the vehicle, the fuel volume in the tank, and your suburb. Ben confirms the price before we start. No Fix, No Fee — if we cannot get you back on the road, you do not pay.
How long does the fix take on-site? +
Most jobs take 45 to 90 minutes once Ben arrives. Smaller cars are quicker. Utes and 4WDs with bigger tanks take longer. The whole thing — from your call to driving away — is usually under 2 hours in Perth metro.
Will my comprehensive insurance cover this? +
Most AU comprehensive policies cover misfuelling — AAMI, NRMA, RAC, Allianz, Suncorp, Bingle, RACV, and others. We give you a tax invoice on the spot. You pay us and claim it back from your insurer. Some policies have an excess; some do not. Worth checking your PDS.
