First, Check Your HiLux Is A Diesel

Almost every HiLux grade runs on diesel. Almost. It's worth ten seconds before anything else happens.

The New HiLux

On sale since December 2025.

Every fuel-burning version runs a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel, WorkMate included. The old petrol option is gone. If yours is one of these and petrol went in, this page is for you.

The Previous HiLux

SR, SR5, Rogue and GR Sport all ran on diesel.

The WorkMate was different. It came with a choice of a diesel or a 2.7-litre petrol engine.

Why Petrol Is Bad News In A Diesel HiLux

The diesel in your HiLux does two jobs. It's the fuel, and it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump.

Petrol is a solvent. It strips that lubrication away, and the pump runs at very fine tolerances under high pressure. That's where the damage starts.

Diesel engines also run much higher compression than petrol engines. Petrol can ignite too early in there, which costs power and can cause damage.

Never Started It?

You're in the best spot. The fix is usually a drain, a flush and fresh diesel.

Already Driven It?

It may lose power or start knocking. Pull over when it's safe and switch off. The longer it runs, the more can go wrong, from a simple flush up to a new pump, filters and injectors.

Don't Start It

Don't turn the key to on. If your HiLux has a start button, don't press it. Starting the engine pulls the petrol through the fuel system.

Don't Move It

Leave it at the pump and let the servo staff know what happened. Ben can work where it sits.

Work Out How Much Went In

A HiLux tank holds 80 litres. Check your receipt for the litres of petrol, and think about how much diesel was in there first.

Can I Drive My HiLux If Only A Little Petrol Went In?

Don't risk it. Any petrol thins out the diesel that lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump. Leave the engine off and call Ben. He'll talk you through what to do next.

Is My HiLux Petrol Or Diesel?

Every fuel-burning HiLux sold new since December 2025 runs a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel. On the previous model, only the WorkMate was offered with a petrol engine, a 2.7-litre. Not sure which you have? Check the owner's manual before anything goes in or comes out.

Will My HiLux Need A New Fuel Pump?

Usually not, if you catch it early. If the engine was never started, a drain and flush is usually the whole job. If it was driven, the risk of damage climbs and some parts may need replacing. Ben assesses it on the phone and tells you exactly what happens next.
