Diesel in a petrol car?
Don't try to drive it.

Diesel won't ignite properly in a petrol engine — the car will misfire, smoke, and lose power. Ben comes to you, drains the tank, and refuels with petrol. Most jobs on-site in 30-45 minutes.

What's actually happening

Petrol engines work by compressing a fuel-air mix and igniting it with a spark plug. Diesel needs much higher compression than petrol engines provide, so it doesn't ignite cleanly — it just sits in the cylinders and burns badly.

The result: heavy smoke (often white from unburned diesel, sometimes black), severe misfiring, loss of power, and progressive fouling of the spark plugs and catalytic converter the longer you drive on it.

The good news: this damage is mostly limited to fuel-system contamination if caught early. We drain, flush, replace the fuel filter if needed, refuel with petrol, and the engine runs the same as before.

Do this right now

  1. 1

Stop. Leave it where it is.

If you noticed at the pump, don't start the engine. If you've already started it, turn it off the moment it starts misfiring.

  2. 2

    Call Ben on 0416 692 022.

Tell him your suburb, vehicle, and roughly how much diesel went in. He gives you a real ETA on the call.

  3. 3

    Wait with the car.

No tow needed. Ben brings the mobile rig to you. If you're at a servo, the staff will be fine with it.

  4. 4

Drive away — full tank of petrol.

We drain, flush, swap the filter if needed, and refuel. You get a tax invoice for your insurer.

Questions about diesel in petrol

I put diesel in my petrol car. Can I drive a short distance? +

No. Even a few hundred metres causes damage. Diesel does not ignite properly in a petrol engine — you will misfire, smoke heavily, and risk fouling the spark plugs and catalytic converter. Stop where you are, leave the engine off, and call Ben.

Is diesel in a petrol car as bad as petrol in a diesel? +

Less immediately catastrophic, yes. The damage curve is different — diesel in a petrol engine causes misfiring and clogged injectors rather than pump failure. Caught at the pump, the fix is straightforward and the engine runs fine after.

I noticed before starting the engine. What now? +

Best-case scenario. Do not start the car. Call Ben — he comes to you in 35-60 minutes, drains the tank, flushes the lines, replaces the fuel filter if needed, refuels with petrol, and you drive away. Usually 30-45 minutes once on-site.

I started the engine and it ran rough. Should I be worried? +

Not necessarily. Diesel in a petrol engine causes immediate misfiring — which is your engine telling you to stop. If you stopped quickly, the damage is usually limited to fuel-system contamination, which we can fix on-site. If you drove for several minutes, we may recommend a workshop check for spark plugs and catalytic converter afterwards.

How much does it cost? +

Most jobs are between $150 and $350, depending on the vehicle and fuel volume. Ben confirms the exact price before we start. $$ is the typical band. No Fix, No Fee.

How long does the service take? +

Most diesel-in-petrol jobs take 30-45 minutes on-site. That is faster than petrol-in-diesel because the fuel system damage profile is simpler.
